De fleste af disse mineralkilder blev opdaget og brugt allerede af keltiske stammer i 5. århundrede før Kristus.

Piešťany is the oldest and the most famous spa town in Slovakia, situated only 80 km north from Slovak capital – Bratislava. A motorway will bring you to this well - known curative place within one hour drive. Piešťany was the first spa town in Europe, which offered balneal treatment for those who suffered arthritis and rheumatic diseases. Piešťany uses its hot thermal water sulphur spring (67 - 69ºC, being cooled to 38ºC) for many different treatment purposes.
Spa hotels and bathhouses are picturesque situated on so called “Spa Island” on the river Váh a small walk from the town centre itself. The oldest spa buildings were built in the beginning of 20th century in Art-Nouveau style. A speciality of the curative treatment at Piešťany is sulphurous mud treatment at spahouse Irma.
